FedRAMP and StateRAMP AI Control Extensions
FedRAMP - the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program - provides the authorization framework for cloud services used by US federal agencies. Cloud service providers seeking FedRAMP authorization must demonstrate compliance with NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 security controls.
NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 does not include a dedicated AI control family - and FedRAMP’s current authorization baseline does not include standardized AI-specific controls. The relevant control families for AI deployments under current NIST SP 800-53 guidance include:
SI (System and Information Integrity) - SI-3 (Malware Protection) and SI-7 (Software, Firmware, and Information Integrity) apply to AI model files and inference infrastructure. SI-10 (Information Input Validation) is directly applicable to prompt injection defense. These controls require implementation and monitoring that most agencies have not operationalized for AI systems.
SA (System and Services Acquisition) - SA-11 (Developer Security Testing) and SA-15 (Development Process, Standards, and Tools) require security testing in AI development pipelines. SA-12 (Supply Chain Protection) applies to AI model vendors and training data providers.
AU (Audit and Accountability) - AU-2 (Event Logging) and AU-9 (Protection of Audit Information) must be extended to cover AI-specific events - model queries, inference outputs, model updates, and anomalous input patterns.

MANAGE - Prioritizing and responding to AI risks. Monitoring requirements: incident response activation tracking, remediation progress monitoring, risk treatment effectiveness measurement.
